Description

Summary

The Department of Surgery is hiring a chief of breast surgery. The breast surgery service encompasses both benign and malignant diseases of the breast, sees over 400 patient visits per year, and performs over 200 surgeries per year. The breast surgery department collaborates with medical oncology, interventional radiology, and radiation oncology to provide comprehensive breast cancer care to our patients. The breast surgery division exists within the department of surgery, which is home to over 50 surgeons and 35 advance practice providers. Denver Health serves as a satellite site for several fellowships, residency programs, and medical schools; education of residents is a core responsibility of our surgical faculty. The Department of Surgery is also committed to rigorous research and academic advancement; our faculty each have academic appointments at the University of Colorado School of Medicine.

The Organization

Denver Health is an integrated, efficient, academic health care system that is considered a model for the nation. Denver Health’s Level 1 Trauma Center, in particular, is one of the world’s leading trauma centers and has amongst the highest survival rates in the country. The trauma center sees 18,000 patients annually, 2700 of whom are admitted, and many of whom arrive as transfers from any one of 60 regional hospitals. The trauma service is extraordinarily academically productive with millions in grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and United States Department of Defense (DoD). The seminal text “Trauma” was authored by Denver Health faculty.

As Colorado’s primary safety net institution, Denver Health provides the full spectrum of medical services from primary to oncologic care. Serving one third of the city of Denver, as well as patients from outside Denver, Denver Health provides primary care services via a citywide network of community health centers, school-based health clinics, and is now in the middle of building a 6-story 293,000 square foot outpatient medical center. Inpatient services are housed in multiple campus buildings with 555 pediatric, adult, and OB/GYN beds. Denver Health is committed to serving all patients, regardless of the ability to pay.

Denver Health is affiliated with the University Of Colorado School Of Medicine. All faculty at Denver Health have University appointments, and some also deliver care at the University campus as well. Faculty have access to the academic and cultural resources of Denver Health and the University.

 Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Clinical responsibilities of this position include:
  • Attending on breast surgery service
  • Elective breast surgery practice including elective clinics and operating room blocks.
  • Administrative responsibilities of this position include directorship of the breast surgery service line, including protocol development, maintenance, enforcement, and revision, quality control, adverse event reporting pathways, trainee and staff education, and research.
  • Physicians at Denver Health are faculty members of the University of Colorado School of Medicine serve as teachers for students seeking clinical experience at Denver Health and provide education for post graduate medical trainees.
  • Focus on Superior Patient Care by: 1) practicing evidence-based, high-quality state-of-the art medicine; 2) encourage increased patient understanding, involvement in care, and treatment decisions; 3) achieve and maintain optimal patient access; 4) insist on departmental focus on superior patient service; and 5) participate in or support education and research.

  • Foster and support new and ongoing EGS research initiatives.Collaborate with other departments on multidisciplinary research efforts relevant to EGS patients. Support grant applications for research funding on EGS related topics.
  • Abide by the Medical Staff Bylaws and conduct oneself in a professional and collegial manner in all aspects of work. Abide by all hospital policies including timeliness of documentation, chart completion, and electronic medical record maintenance.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience

1.Graduation from an Accredited Medical School and completed Accredited Residency Programs and fellowships for specialist, or equivalent.

2.Board Certification or Board Eligibility in General Surgery.

3.Breast Surgical Oncology Fellowship Training is highly preferable but not required.
